For Authors
Submit ManuscriptGWJOLT has opened submissions for our inaugural Spring 2025 Issue.
Submission
The George Washington Journal of Law and Technology (“GWJOLT”) is seeking articles that address critical issues arising at the nexus of law and technology. We aim to reach a broad readership and to perform important sensemaking functions, by selecting and publishing contributions by legal scholars, legal practitioners, technology professionals, and policymakers, that promote cross-disciplinary legal discourse amongst those with insights into emerging issues at both the frontiers of technology and law, and dialogue between those experts and the general public.
We welcome submissions from leading figures on topics in the fields of intellectual property, privacy, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and other existing and emerging areas of technology-related law—to help us make sense of new developments and to help influence the future of these fields. With close proximity to the readership of our nation’s capital, we prefer articles that focus on the law of the United States, but welcome and encourage scholarship on issues of international scope and importance that may influence or shape U.S. domestic law, or its response to international issues.
Submit an Article
GWJOLT receives and accepts all submissions electronically on a rolling basis, via Scholastica. Please submit manuscripts and other documents in Word file format (PDF and other text formats are not accepted). Manuscripts should include the author’s institutional affiliation, telephone number, and e-mail address in an initial footnote. Other documents an author must submit a resume or CV and a brief abstract, and may submit a cover letter.
GWJOLT values brevity. While there is no word limit, we look favorably on pieces with 30,000 words of fewer (including footnotes), and particularly value pieces that fall significantly below that 30,000 cut-off. Double-spacing and normal margins are also preferred.
The Review and Evaluation
GWJOLT will publish its inaugural issue in January 2025.
We begin review of articles for this inaugural issue on February 1. We strongly encourage that submissions be made as soon as the submission portal opens. Off-peak submissions may be reviewed, as necessary, when unexpected gaps emerge, but there is no guarantee of review. All manuscripts will be acknowledged shortly after receipt, but not all are sent for review.
The editorial review process generally takes 3-4 weeks, and are selected based on factors of the novelty of the subject matter, its potential impact on the current state of law and technology, the strength of the presented arguments, and the written quality of that presentation. A final decision is made by the Senior Articles Editor and the Editor in Chief and will be communicated via Scholastica.
GWJOLT welcomes careful analysis or advocacy of policy matters concerning law and technology, but prohibits publication of defamatory, illegal, or purely partisan content. Unsolicited manuscripts from academics, practitioners, policymakers, and non-GW law students are welcome, if neither the article nor any part of its essential substance has been or will be published elsewhere before appearing in GWJOLT.
Style and Citation Format
All citations to legal sources should conform to the most recent edition of The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation—currently the 21st edition. Manuscripts citing social science and hard science literature may choose to follow the citation guidelines of The Chicago Manual of Style, as needed.
Expedited Review and Withdrawal
For our inaugural Spring 2025 issue, GWJOLT allows author requests for expedited review.
An author may request expedited review if another journal has given you an offer and you inform the Senior Articles Editor, via the Scholastica submission portal, the name(s) of the journal(s) that have accepted the manuscript, when each offer was given, and when each offer expires. GWJOLT will only expedite review on the basis of actual offers. Expedited submissions, if accepted, are subject to shorter offer deadlines than regularly reviewed articles. Furthermore, if we have insufficient time to evaluate an article, we will be forced to reject it without further review.
For an author wishing to withdraw a submission from consideration, please use the withdraw function via Scholastica or notify GWJOLT directly via e-mail. Please withdraw submissions as soon as you have accepted an offer elsewhere.
Accepting a Publication Offer
An author acknowledges that when an article is submitted for consideration and is accepted by GWJOLT, it shall undergo a rigorous editing process for publication. This editorial process aims to refine the style of the author’s scholarship so that the substance may appear polished and professional to our readership. To maintain the highest editorial standards, acceptance of an article by GWJOLT is premised upon the author’s cooperation when editors suggest modifications in the proof returned to the author.
Other Manuscript Guidelines
Authors should disclose if any portion of a manuscript has been previously published, and if so, which portions.
Authors should also disclose at the time of submission any financial, consulting, or other arrangement they may have with a company or organization whose products or interests figure prominently in the submitted manuscript.
The Editors strongly encourage authors to use footnotes rather than endnotes, and to configure their spam filters so as not to intercept GWJOLT communications.
Thank you for your interest in publishing with GWJOLT. We look forward to reading your submissions!
